Hope in action

Behind every donation is a story.

Your gift to the Neighbors Fund provides immediate, practical help for a neighbor facing an unexpected crisis.

Here you’ll meet some of the people whose lives have been touched by your generosity — parents, older adults, veterans, and families from across the Cape & Islands. These stories reflect what your support makes possible: stability, dignity, and hope when it’s needed most.

Preventing a Small Set Back from Becoming an Unsurmountable Crisis

At 75, Mildred* lives alone in elderly housing on Martha’s Vineyard and manages to get by on a fixed income. Between Social Security and a small food assistance benefit, there’s no cushion — every dollar is carefully budgeted. Recently, a paperwork issue caused her Medicare premium assistance to lapse. Although Mildred worked with a health advocate to sort it out, the bills kept coming. Like so many seniors, just one unexpected expense is all it takes to tip the balance, forcing Mildred to choose between paying the premium, heating her home, or buying food for herself. It’s not an ongoing need — just a temporary gap she can’t bridge alone.  Thanks to our donors, the Neighbors Fund stepped in to help Mildred with food and medical bills to stabilize her situation. Your support prevented a small setback from becoming a much bigger crisis

“Sometimes when the world seems hard, so very, very hard and the situation seems impossible, one can reach out and a kindness be extended and the world again is warm. Thank you.”

- Elderly resident, Martha’s Vineyard

Family Relaxing Together

When Childcare Determines a Family’s Future

Cape Cod is widely recognized as a childcare desert, with too few licensed providers to meet demand. For working parents, that shortage can mean choosing between employment and caring for their children. Mark*, a recently single father in Hyannis faced that reality after gaining sole custody of his two young children, Maddy* and Jake*. Without full-time childcare, he was limited to part-time work—an unsustainable path as he worked toward a teaching degree. When a full-time childcare slot finally opened, he seized it but needed short-term support during the transition to full-time employment. Through donor generosity, the Neighbors Fund ensured he didn’t lose that opportunity. He is now working full-time, continuing his studies, and providing stability and consistency for his children.

Your support helps parents remain employed, secure safe care for their children, and build stronger futures for their families.

Elderly Support Interaction

Bridging the Gap for a Medically Fragile Neighbor

Lucy* is a medically fragile neighbor living alone on a fixed income, careful with every dollar and used to getting by with very little. But lately, even the basics have become harder to manage. Rent has increased, food assistance benefits have decreased, and groceries cost more each month. Since Lucy doesn’t drive, she relies on the bus to get everywhere — to the store, to appointments, to daily errands. When her electric bill rose toward shutoff, she had no cushion left to fall back on. Lucy lives a modest lifestyle and is simply trying to make it through each month with the lights on and food on the table. Thanks to Neighbors Fund donors, she was provided with food assistance, a bus pass, and help with her electric bill — along with connections to fuel assistance and other supportive services to help Lucy stay self-sufficient moving forward.

“I can’t express enough gratitude to your organization for helping me as I attempt to stay on top of paying my bills.”
